Alistair Harley - a Short Biography

I started my working life as a Petrol pump attendant, cemetery worker, road sweeper and Draughtsman, making a career change to Psychiatric Nursing and moving to management and latterly helping in the design of a major District General Hospital - The Conquest in Hastings, East Sussex. I then moved into a business dear to my lifelong passion, selling parts and accessories for Harley-Davidson, Custom and Chopper motorcycles. I was never content with just selling, designing and manufacturing parts and like to think I have learnt much that I can also pass onto others. This business has now been sold – see  www.harleycustom.co.uk     www.harleycustom.com   www.harleycustom.nl    www.harleycustom.cn and  www.harleycustom.in    I started by writing information as a resource for those who were designing and building their own custom bike. I have supplied pictures and writing for motorcycle magazines as well as experience in designing website content and brochures. See www.alistairharley.com
Until recently I lived in one of the most beautiful parts of England. The area has been lived in since Roman times and was the centre of iron and gunpowder manufacture for many centuries. The town of Battle is only 4 miles distant and is the historic site of the battle of Hastings in 1066 when the Duke of Normandy defeated the Saxon King Harold.   I was born in North London and grew up in Winchmore Hill in Southgate and have been a supporter of Tottenham Hotspur FC since the late 1950s. I have also lived in Edinburgh and Dorchester and am now living in the Isle of Lewis and Great Bernera. I have always dreamt of building my own house and have found some freehold land next to the sea amongst beautiful scenery.  Doing a self build house is a new experience for me and quite a challenge and I am on a steep learning curve. If any of my experience or knowledge is helpful to anyone else embarking on a similar track, please dont hesitate to contact me. I will tell you when I dont know the answer or am not sure of something because getting the right information is so important.

Great Bernera has many small villages such as Bosta, Croir, Tobson, Breaclete, Valasay, Hacklete, Barraglom, Earshader, Kirkibost, Totarol, and surrounded by sea lochs East Loch Roag, Loch Roag, West Loch Roag. To the west is Uig and the north is Little Bernera seperated by a water channel. Callanish (or Callanais) and Gearrannan is a short drive away. Breaclete has a primary school and community centre and further information can be found on  Uig and Bernera Community Web Site

I will add details, pictures and pdf downloads over time.
